PROGRAMS: WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT

OVERVIEW

The goal of the Women’s Empowerment Program is that: by 2025, poor and vulnerable women in rural Burundi will live in dignity and fully enjoy their fundamental rights. The target group will be comprised of poor women aged 18 to 50 years from rural areas who are vulnerable to gender based violence, living in households with less than 0.5 hectares of land and who are without access or control over other productive assets. The Women’s Empowerment Program will ultimately be national in scope. In fact, the advocacy efforts should have national impact from the very beginning. Some of the main problems faced by women in Burundi include: lack of education; physical, sexual and psycho-social abuse and violence in their homes and communities as well as exposure to HIV and AIDS and unwanted pregnancy; lack of control over relationships; lack of representation.
